Back to School is a Great Time for Annual Eye Exams
From elementary school to college, it’s back to the classroom for many students this week and next. That means lots of kids are already out shopping for new threads and new school supplies with Mom and Dad, perusing the racks for the latest fashion musts and digging deep in the bargain bins for new pens, pencils, and note taking supplies.
Did you know this is also a great time to schedule your child’s yearly eye exam?
Why wait until after school begins to find out little “Johnny” or “Janey” is having trouble seeing the board, computer screen, or reading assignments? If your child needs new lenses because the old ones are scratched, a stronger prescription, or his or her first pair of glasses, there’s no time like the present to make it happen.
- Between the ages of 6 and 18, the American Optometric Association recommends your child receive an eye examination every year, or more frequently if specific problems or risk factors exist, or if recommended by your eye doctor.
- For college-aged students, 19 and up, periodic eye exams are recommended—every one to two years, and especially if your child develops other health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or symptoms of visual decline.
Yearly exams are also a great way to catch changes in your child’s eye health early, before they can affect his or her overall health and academic performance.
