It’s the second week of 2018. How are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions?

According to an article that appeared in Huffington Post around this time last year, only 8 percent of those who make resolutions actually keep them all year long! Further, Business Insider reports that some 80 percent of resolution-makers fail by the second week of February.

Clearly, the odds aren’t in favor of any of us keeping our resolutions.

That said, Sunglass and Optical Warehouse hopes you do keep one important resolution in 2018 (and every year for that matter), and that’s for you and your family to see better and look better.

  1. Get Regular Eye Exams

Getting annual eye exams for you and your family members is a great way to practice prevention. Some conditions (such as glaucoma and cataracts) show few symptoms until they’ve advanced to a serious stage. Regular eye exams are recommended for everyone, even when you are symptom free. The American Optometric Association recommends that children get their first vision exam at age 6 months, at 3 years of age, before first grade, and then every two years thereafter to age 18. As adults 18 to 60, the AOA recommends exams every two years, and then every year after age 61.

  1. Routine Eye Screenings for Your Children

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommend that school age children receive routine eye screenings for visual acuity and alignment by a pediatrician, family doctor, ophthalmologist, optometrist, or other person trained in vision assessment of school-aged children. Vision screenings are good tools to assess general vision acuity and screen for common conditions such as nearsightedness (myopia). Going back to school or the end of the school year serves as a good annual reminder to have your children’s eyes checked.

  1. Give Your Eyes a Break from Digital Screens

The Vision Council reports that as little as two hours of exposure to LED lights, displays, and other “glowing devices” in one setting can affect our eyes in the form of digital eye strain, dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and neck and shoulder pain. Chief culprits are—and there’s no surprise here—computers, smartphones, and tablets! If you suffer from what could be digital eyestrain, check with a qualified eye care provider to discuss your digital habits and what eyewear solutions might be available to relieve your symptoms, such as developing new habits, new lenses, and/or new frames. Some DIY solutions to help relieve eyestrain from digital devices include taking a 20-second break from your screen every 20 minutes and looking at something 20 feet away (aka the 20-20-20 rule); reducing overhead lighting to cut down on screen glare; keeping your eyes about the length of your arm away from computer monitors; and increasing on-screen text size and adjusting contrast settings.

  1. Replace Old Prescriptions/Frames

It’s not uncommon for prescription lenses to need updating or replacing due to scratches and damage—plus our eyes change from year to year. The same goes for frames, especially with children and young adults. Just as they outgrow clothing and shoes, it’s quite possible their frames no longer fit their faces properly, which can affect vision and comfort.

  1. Protect Your Eyes from Sun

Exposure to UV rays has been linked to eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye disorders. It’s essential that adults and children wear proper eye protection while outside, regardless of the season or time of day. Luckily, the right pair of sunglasses—whether prescription or non-prescription—can block UV rays. Look for stickers or labels on the sunglasses verifying UV protection or, better yet, ask an eye care professional about anti-reflective coatings, UV treatments, and other ways to boost UV protection.

  1. Play it Safe: Protect Your Eyes from Injury

If you want to look great and keep your eyes safe, stylish sports frames and safety lenses are essential. Whether your hobby, sport, job, or lifestyle puts you in situations where the possibility of eye injury is heightened, eye damage as a result of injury is very preventable with proper eye protection. Sunglass and Optical Warehouse offers safety glasses for work, tactical applications, and sports that are both stylish and durable.

  1. Stay Trendy

While eye health is paramount, keeping up with the latest eyewear fashion trends is critical too. After all, styles change.
