The holidays can be a dangerous time for your eyes. Really, we’re serious. Read on to learn of the mishaps that can occur while we’re making merry, and a few of the things you and yours can do to avoid an unwanted eye injury.

Flying Champagne Corks

The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that flying champagne corks are the cause of serious, blinding eye injuries every holiday season. You don’t want to end up in the Emergency Room with ocular bleeding, dislocation of the lens, or a rupture of some sort. Instead, follow these easy steps to avoid a dangerous and embarrassing mishap.

Simply angle your bottle of champagne or sparkling wine away from you and any bystanders as you remove the wire harness from the bottle, holding the cork down with your palm as you do. Then, place a towel over the cork and keep downward pressure as you twist the bottle to break the seal and release the bubbly with a loud “POP!” (Also, keep in mind that the cork of a chilled bottle of champagne or sparkling wine is less likely to pop unexpectedly, so keep it cold!)

Toys and Packaging with Sharp Edges/Projectiles

Things can get pretty hectic with gift-giving and receiving, especially when little ones are involved. Amidst all the excitement of getting a new gift or toy to play with, take special care to watch for any sharp or pointy edges. This applies to both the toy and the packaging it comes in.

And while we’re all familiar with the “you’ll shoot your eye out” refrain, don’t just limit attentiveness to items designed to shoot gun-like projectiles (from BB guns to Nerf toys to bows and arrows). Any toy that features automatic or rapid/unexpected movements can be dangerous to the eyes! Overall, there were an estimated 240,000 toy-related injuries treated in US ERs in 2016.

Cuts & Scratches form Christmas Tree Branches, Ornaments, or Rough-Housing

Even small scratches can cause serious eye injuries, or at least enough discomfort to wreck the holidays. Scratching your cornea can be serious business and painful, causing blurred vision, light sensitivity, redness, and excessive tears.

According to WebMd, small scratches usually heal on their own, while deeper injuries can cause long-term vision problems. Over the holidays, Christmas tree branches, ornaments, toys, or kids engaged in some good natured rough-housing can all lead to eye injury.

Have Fun and Be Mindful

So while it’s unlikely you or a loved one will experience an eye injury this holiday season, it’s best to be mindful while you’re enjoying a bit of holiday merriment with friends and family.
