More than ever, glasses—especially sunglasses—are becoming fashion accessories, not just eyewear necessities. Eyeglass and sunglass consumers are not only looking to improve their eyesight and protect their eyes from UV exposure, but they are looking to match frames and lenses to their outfits, their face shapes and sizes, and to their personalities, which drives up demand.

Eyewear Represents a Growing Market

Apparently, function plus fashion is a huge boon to the vision wear industry, with the global market for eye wear expected to eclipse $165 billion by 2022 according to a trends analysis by Global Market Insights, Inc., a US-based global market research and consulting service. Fueling the anticipated growth of 7% year-to-year is the rise of optical service availability worldwide and an aging population, as well as consumer awareness of the need for UV protection and greater demand for eyeglasses and sunglasses as fashion accessories.

The total value of the US vision care market in 2016 was $35 billion. For comparison purposes, the NFL generated revenue of $13 billion in 2016 and MLB is expected to surpass $10 billion in revenue for 2017.

What Do Fashion Trends Hold?

It goes without saying that fashion preferences are wildly subjective. What one person thinks looks great, might be unappealing to another. Fashion likes and dislikes, when it comes to eyewear, truly is in the eye of the beholder.

That said, Business Insider recently reported on the favorite fashion trends for sunglass wearers—according to a number of celebrities. A scientific survey? Hardly. But celebs tend to have their collective fingers on the pulse of what’s cool and what isn’t, and with sunglasses fast becoming a must-have fashion accessory what better experts than the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Bella Hadid, Reese Witherspoon, and Constance Jablonski to take a “visual” cue from?
