What Are You Wearing? Classic Sunglass Fashions that Are Always in Style

Stylish sunglasses say a lot about the person wearing them. Sometimes, they become almost synonymous with that person.

Can you think of Jackie (Kennedy) Onassis and NOT think of her oversized sunglasses? She wore them as a senator’s wife, first lady, and then as the wife of a Greek tycoon. And who can forget Tom Cruise in Top Gun? He made Ray-Ban Aviators cool again. And let’s not overlook the shades he donned in Risky Business. Those would be a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

Let’s take a look at three iconic sunglasses styles and the people who wore them most famously.

AVIATOR glasses came on the scene in the 1930s. Mainly made for pilots to optimize peripheral view protection, they feature thin wire frames, large dark lenses, and a double bridge. This style was originally developed by Ray-Ban, but now many manufacturers make these classily shaped sunglasses.

The WAYFARER style originated in the 1950s from (you guessed it!) Ray-Ban. Often recognized as the bestselling design of all time, this iconic style features trapezoid-shaped frames and thick rims. Wayfarers were initially popular for their unique look in the 1950s and 1960s, and have made a bit of a stylistic comeback in the 2000s.

Inspired by, as the name suggests, feline looks, CAT EYE glasses became popular in the 1950s, primarily as a new look in eyeglass styles for women. The glasses were originally created to be worn only with optical lenses, but they soon became very popular with sunglasses, too. Initially, cat eye frames and wayfarers were quite similar, but wayfarers have grown to be more squarish and “masculine” while cat eyes have retained their feline, more feminine look.
